On Friday night, in the premiere of his appealingly chaotic livestreaming variety show “Everybody’s in L.A.,” which runs every night this week, John Mulaney delivered a monologue about his adopted city next to a map that broke it down into a crooked jigsaw puzzle of neighborhoods. It’s the biggest comedy showcase of the year (with more than 500 offerings, a 40 percent increase from the festival’s already mammoth debut event in 2022) but also something of a corporate flex. Who else could get Hannah Gadsby and Shane Gillis in the same festival or draw the talk-show titans Jon Stewart and David Letterman to host events? The most newsworthy shift this year was the aggressive move into livestreaming events, following the blockbuster success of Chris Rock’s 2023 special, “Selective Outrage,” about being slapped at the Oscars. (One of that ceremony’s hosts, Wanda Sykes, returned to the place it happened, the Dolby Theater, for a festival show and began by saying this time no one would get assaulted).

In one lunar region, Japan’s “Moon Sniper” mission has beaten the odds and survived three long, frigid lunar nights since its sideways landing on January 19. The Tianwen-2 mission will visit the space rock later this decade. But first, China has set its sights on returning to the moon’s “hidden side.”An illustration depicts the far side of the moon, with Earth behind it. Since the Chang’e 4 mission in 2019, China remains the only country to have landed on the moon’s far side, sometimes called the “dark side” of the moon. Scientists hope that returning samples from the far side could solve some of the biggest remaining lunar mysteries, including the moon’s true origin.

It is the middle of Sunday afternoon, and he has not yet finished his shift at the barbershop. “I took a break for the love of the game,” Mr. Adeshina said. Mr. Adeshina became an Arsenal fan in the late 1990s, when Nigerian cable channels first began broadcasting the Premier League. If anything, though, Mr. Adeshina says his connection to the team is even deeper now. “He’s Yoruba, I’m Yoruba,” Mr. Adeshina said, in a tone rather softer than that with which he celebrated his idol’s first-half goal against Spurs.

Known as Shanidar Z, after the cave in Iraqi Kurdistan where she was found in 2018, the woman was a Neanderthal, a type of ancient human that disappeared around 40,000 years ago. The Shanidar Z facial reconstruction suggests that these differences might not have been so stark in life, Pomeroy said. Shanidar cave in Iraqi Kurdistan was first excavated in the 1950s. Neanderthals may not have honored their dead with bouquets of flowers, but the inhabitants of Shanidar Cave were likely an empathetic species, research suggests. Shanidar Z is the first Neanderthal found in the cave in more than 50 years, Pomeroy said, but the site could still yield more discoveries.

Going from Princess Diana, a lovely icon who generated waves of sympathy, to Vladimir Putin, an icy villain who generates waves of disdain, might be difficult for some writers. Not Peter Morgan. After pulling back the curtain on the British royal family for six seasons of “The Crown,” Morgan was keen to move on. Morgan enjoys writing about the vilified, giving them a fighting chance. In “Patriots,” he creates a jigsaw of four Russian men, their fates intertwining in the post-Soviet era, who represent a Byzantine spectrum of moral values.

The House is set to vote this weekend on a foreign aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan that has been stalled for months. The strategy is designed to capitalize on the distinct bases of political support for the various pieces of the foreign aid package, worth $95.3 billion, without allowing opposition to any one element defeat the whole thing. Mr. Johnson regards it as a necessity given his vanishingly slim majority and the large number of Republicans who staunchly oppose sending aid to Ukraine. He will need to rely on support from Democrats not only to win passage of the funding for Kyiv, but also to prevail on a procedural vote needed to bring the package to the floor. On Thursday, Mr. Johnson was working to get that procedural measure through the House Rules Committee, where three Republicans have said they will block it, meaning that Democratic support would be needed just to get it out of committee.

CNN —Catherine, Princess of Wales, has revealed she has cancer and is undergoing preventative chemotherapy after weeks of speculation over her health and absence from the public eye. She has become all the more important to the British royals since Harry and Meghan quit as senior royals, Prince Andrew became engulfed in scandal, and the death of Queen Elizabeth II. It was there that she met Prince William, then the 19-year-old son of Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, and Princess Diana. Around 1,900 guests attended the ceremony while the British public were granted an extra public holiday to mark the occasion. However, she apologized earlier this month after Kensington Palace released an edited photo the princess took to mark Mother’s Day.

Kate's claim that she is an amateur photographer is questionable, an expert said. CHRIS JACKSON/Getty ImagesHer description of herself as an amateur photographer could very well be down to the British trait of modesty, but people aren't convinced. The palace typically uses Kate's photos instead of hiring a royal photographer to mark major occasions and milestones, such as birthdays. Speaking to BI in 2020, royal photographer Samir Hussein said Kate takes photos that "any professional would be very happy with." Kate's statement comes during a crisis period after King Charles announced his cancer diagnosis in January.

By Martin CoulterLONDON (Reuters) - Google is preparing to launch an anti-misinformation campaign across five countries in the European Union (EU), the company told Reuters ahead of the bloc's parliamentary elections and tougher new rules tackling online content. France, Poland and Germany accused Russia on Monday of putting together an elaborate network of websites to spread pro-Russian propaganda. Jigsaw's ads will be translated into all 24 official EU languages, the company said. The campaign will run for at least one month, with a view to extend it based on reach and performance. Results from the campaign, including survey responses and the number of people reached, are expected to be published in summer 2024.

The project, dubbed Metamorphosis, focuses on transforming what otherwise might be discarded into something of value to society: rotten wood into fine instruments, inmates into craftsmen, all under the principle of rehabilitation. Two inmates were granted leave to see the concert featuring 14 prison-made stringed instruments playing a program that included works by Bach and Vivaldi. Other inmates, like Nikolae, who joined Lamponi at La Scala, are permitted more latitude. His own rocky journey to a new country has given him an understanding of the desperation that drove migrants onto unseaworthy boats. Originally, the boats were being transformed into crucifixes and nativity scenes, but the inmates who were already trained luthiers thought: why not instruments?

For family bedtime reading, we just started “Julie of the Wolves” by Jean Craighead George. Mostly I try to write books that I would enjoy reading myself. But more than a decade into this career, I would still rather spend my time writing than doing just about anything else. It has a lot to do with perspective, which is something we can cultivate if we’re intentional about it. Piecing together a bunch of random scenes until they become one coherent story, like building a complicated jigsaw puzzle.

"Sue Bird: In the Clutch," a documentary on the career and personal life of the WNBA star, wasn't the most buzzed-about film at Sundance. Nike's success could encourage more brands to follow its leadNike has long been a big player in brand-funded films. Many brands dream of getting their films on Netflix, where even relatively small viewership numbers are bigger than they'd get on a rival streamer. Brands often work alongside traditional Hollywood players, which lends credibility to film projects. But the more films like "In the Clutch" get wide distribution, the more other brands could be encouraged to pursue similar storytelling.

Ron DeSantis made a big bet on winning Iowa as he charted out a path for capturing the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. But shortly before the Iowa caucuses, DeSantis had a significant polling deficit against Trump, and had seen his support decline so much that he looked to be in a neck-and-neck race for second place with former South Carolina Gov. The DeSantis and Haley camps each believed they would benefit if the other left the field and created an unambiguous one-on-one race with Trump. In fact, both the Trump and DeSantis campaigns believe that more of the Florida governor’s supporters will likely pick Trump. Any gain or loss for Haley among voters from DeSantis’ decision seems likely to affect the race only marginally, many GOP observers believe. Even at that point in the 2016 race, Trump had won only a cumulative 40% of the votes cast in the GOP primaries. His theory that he could peel away a meaningful number of previous Trump voters simply proved wrong.

It’s a tricky thing to write a crotchety old person, and pretty soon the reader wonders what sort of redeeming qualities will make it desirable to spend time in Eugene’s presence. “Well, imagine being young,” he explains. Eugene begins the novel in self-confinement, hiding away in his room doing jigsaw puzzles, but Angel has a charm that slowly wins over the grouch. Angel gives him nicknames, like calling Eugene “homie,” “dog” and “Geno,” much to his chagrin; and he urges the old man to leave his bubble. Jared Cohen: If you reflect back on most of the last 20 years, the geopolitical center of gravity has been in the Middle East. But there’s a paradigmatic shift where the geopolitical center of gravity has moved from the Middle East to Washington and Beijing. That’s before you get into other factors like the war in Europe, now, the war in the Middle East and a variety of other things. I don’t think that’s the case. Leaders in the Middle East have a big vision of their role in the world.
